Buying a good domain name

Choosing a good domain name is one of most important steps in setting up your online business. Your domain name should be relevant to your business and to the content on your web site. However, looking for a great domain name that is catchy and sounds good, yet still is short enough to fit on a business card for example, can be hard. If you have ever tried searching for domain names, you may find that the process of finding just the right one for you, can be time consuming and not always as easy as you may have thought.

Choose a domain name wisely

When thinking about buying a domain name you should always consider (in our opinion anyway), just exactly how the domain name will read to the human eye if it is in printed form. It can be easy to think of a domain name, but not only does it have to be available, it should be simple to read. For example two separate words like walnut and tree sound okay, but put them together and it can be a little confusing for the eye -

Don't make the domain name too difficult to remember

Do not choose a domain name that is hard or difficult to remember. It might be that your business name will be different to the actual domain name that you select, but if you choose a long winded domain name, the chances are that many people won't remember it. Your domain name ideally should be memorable and easy for visitors to recall and type into their browser URL address bar if they wanted to do that.

I need a dot com address!

Not necessarily. If for example you are targeting a global market then ideally yes you should use a TLD (Top Level Domain) .com address. But if you are based in the UK, selling or promoting your business to a UK based audience, then a .co.uk domain is fine. We would however recommend that if you can, buy both TLD's of your domain name choice.
